The Importance of Linking Author: Michael Black, President If you've been looking at marketing your site, then you have surely heard of link popularity. Link popularity is the measurement of the number and quality of links to your site. A major factor used in determining how relevant your site is to a search is weather websites that contain similar content link to yours. Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and other leading search engines currently use their own algorithms to analyze your site's incoming links. They use the theory that a site linked to by other similar sites should be relevant to a topic. Search engines strive to provide the best results possible -- the more relevant results they provide, the more likely the user will return. There are many ways to obtain relevant links, and thereby increase your site's popularity. You need to be careful because some methods of linking to your site can cause more harm than good. You need to steer clear of FFAs called link farms. (free for alls... sites to which anyone can add links) These types of sites are recognized by Google's algorithms as spam and can get your site banned from their index. Even if you're not banned, little value will come from link farms since you will receive potentially thousands of links from irrelevant sites. This will seriously hamper the engines in determining your site's relevant niche. The best way to gain targeted, relevant links is to create a wealth of targeted content for your site. If your site presents a lot of information related to your industry, other industry sites will link to you. After your site is filled with rich content, begin to seek links from related sites by offering "reciprocal" links... that is, you'll link to them if they link to you. Be sure to keep your incoming links on target. If you sell lava lamps, don't seek links from a lawn care company. Also, be sure to vary your requested link text. If all links say the same thing, they may, in the future, be picked up as spam as the engines continue to crack down on optimization tactics. To accommodate outbound links, a "links of interest" page should be created. Also, if your subject matter contains a few more specific niches, you can create other link pages targeted to those specific topics. Be sure to offer as much flexibility as possible by allowing potential link partners to post logos and brief descriptions of their sites. Another way to gain links is to check who links to your competition. People who link to other sites within your niche will probably be happy to link to you.
